The industry veteran will be seen next in Priyardashan's Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal.
He told IANS: "It is very rare that character actors get a meaty part. They are there as a character to enhance the hero. They don't have their own individuality.
"Without superstars also films do well. Vicky Donor ran without any big stars or known faces.
"If someone is a good actor, you can make it out the minute he speaks two lines. Even if he is not so good, it is the responsibility of senior actors to coach him because he is in the cast."
Puri added that he is currently looking out for roles in "social films".
The 61-year-old is internationally known for roles in The Jewel in the Crown, East is East and White Teeth.
Last year, the actor admitted that he felt ignored by the big Indian commercial production companies.
However, he has also said previously that he sees arthouse films as his main source of income.
