The favourable critical reception in India follows an earlier standing ovation at the Toronto International Film Festival.
"Easily one of the best films of 2012; a tale of women empowerment because it strikes a chord, right from the start to the end titles," said critic Meena Iyer.
Taran Adarsh added: "On the whole, English Vinglish is a remarkable motion picture. It's amusing, emotional, heartrending and also insightful. An inspiring film with an overwhelming message."
Komal Nahta said on his ETC trade analysis show that the film had a strong script, heartwarming moments and an award-worthy performance from Sridevi.
In spite of good reviews, the film's box office capacity is reportedly between 50-60%, though this is expected to pick up through strong word of mouth.
The project's Mumbai premiere was recently attended by Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit, Yash Chopra, Anil Kapoor, Tabu, Shilpa Shetty, Bipasha Basu, Vidya Balan, Sonakshi Sinha and Kangana Ranaut.
Directed by Gauri Shinde, English Vinglish tells the story of an Indian housewife in the US struggling to cope with the language barrier.
