Amitabh Bachchan has been honoured by the Australian government for his contribution towards Indian cinema.

The veteran actor was recognised at the ceremony for his role in building relations between India and Australia.

Writing about the award on his blog, Bachchan said: "Another recognition by the Australian Government and its Commission here in Mumbai, in celebration for the 100 years of Indian Cinema, and my contribution towards fructifying the relations between the two countries... I am most humbled..."

The Great Gatsby star was previously awarded an honorary doctorate by the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, where he was congratulated by film director Baz Luhrmann via video link.

Bachchan has also been given France's highest civilian honour, the National Order of the Legion of Honour, for his work in cinema.

The actor recently attended the investiture ceremony for daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who was granted the prestigious Order of Arts and Letters, the second highest civilian French honour. Bachchan said it was a matter of great pride for two members of his family to have been honoured by the French government.
