Guzaarish director Sanjay Leela Bhansali recently announced that he planned to make a biopic about the Indian Olympic boxing champion and was considering who would play the lead role in the story of her life.
A source told Mid Day: "Priyanka was in talks with the production house for quite a while now. We were trying to work out her dates and finally things are settled. She is on board to play lead. We intend to begin our workshop with Priyanka and Mary soon."
Bhansali had apparently considered Chopra for the lead role in Ram Leela, a Gujarati retelling of Romeo and Juliet, but Deepika Padukone was finally cast instead with Ranvir Singh.
"That didn't work out," explained the source. "PC was keen to do this film and Bhansali thinks she will be perfect for Mary's role. They met a couple of times to discuss the script and she finally signed the dotted lines."
Chopra will apparently begin rehearsals and training for the role in January and shooting will begin early next year.
The five-times boxing champion has said that the biopic should feature some romance and include the personal story that led to her marriage to her manager Onler Kom, as well as her struggle to achieve success in the world of competitive boxing.
Kom won a bronze medal for India in the 2012 Summer Olympics, which was the first to feature flyweight women's boxing.
The boxer was praised by Amitabh Bachchan for her Olympic accomplishment and met with Abhishek Bachchan, who supported her efforts during the Games.
