Irrfan Khan: 'I had to reshoot all my scenes for Life of Pi'

Irrfan Khan has revealed that he had to reshoot his scenes in Life of Pi after a casting switch.

Director Ang Lee replaced Tobey Maguire with Rafe Spall in the middle of production.

Khan told Bollywood Hungama: "I had to reshoot my entire role in Life of Pi. I'll tell you why. Six to seven months after I finished shooting I got a call from Ang Lee saying we had to do some reshooting. You see, Ang decided to change my co-star who plays the author Yann Martel.

"Initially we shot with Tobey Maguire as Martel. But then after six months I think Ang felt Tobey's image as Spider-Man was too strong. We needed an imageless actor to play Martel because he was a struggling writer and an actor with a strong image could be a hindrance.

"So Ang got Rafe Spall for the role. When I went to LA to reshoot I decided to do my entire role again instead of just reshooting bits and pieces. I discussed it with Ang, and he was game. We both felt the dramatic impact of the story hinged on my scenes with Spall."

The actor added that the film's reception from audiences so far has surprised him.

"I am very excited. Before the release everyone felt the film can't be sold to the audience because there was no story to sell in a nutshell. Our marketing strategy worked," he said.

Khan has previously been praised by The Amazing Spider-Man director Marc Webb for his acting.

In July, the Paan Singh Tomar star said that Bollywood filmmaking was "catching up" with Hollywood.
