Shahid Kapoor and Akshay Kumar have been revealed as the inspiration for a series of Bollywood books.

Author Puneet Bhandal told Digital Spy that although the characters in her novels are fictional, they are loosely based on real-life Hindi film stars.

"Shahid Kapoor was the inspiration behind the 'gorgeous' Ajay Banerjee character in Double Take," said Bhandal, adding: "The central character in Stuntman is inspired by an action hero like Akshay Kumar."

She also confirmed that actor Karisma Kapoor was the inspiration behind one of the lead characters in her first novel in the series.

"The snooty daughter of filmi parents in Starlet Rivalry was loosely based on Karisma Kapoor since she always thought she was a cut above other actresses coming from a family of famous actors," Bhandal said.

The author added that she is happy that her work is being used to promote literacy and encourage young people to read.

"I focus on the incredible glamour of the industry, not the decadence. I did get offered a publishing deal in India last years where they asked me to spice things up but I refused. I have seen the murky side of Bollywood close up, but it doesn't interest me," she said.

"I am more interested in using my Bollywood books to get involved with national reading campaigns, such as The Reading Agency's Six Book Challenge."

Starlet Rivalry, Double Take and Stuntman are out now.
