Sridevi was awarded the honour in recognition of her performance in English Vinglish and for her contribution to Indian cinema generally.

Seventies idol Rajesh Khanna - who died in July last year - and comedian Jaspal Bhatti - who passed away in December - both received the Padma Bhushan posthumously.

Sholay director Ramesh Sippy and actor Nana Patekar were given the Padma Shri while Telugu producer D Ramanaidu and Olympic boxing medallist Mary Kom were awarded the Padma Bhushan.

Kom is the subject of a biopic produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali with Priyanka Chopra in the lead role.

The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year and are conferred by the president of India.
