The US Grand Prix pulled in 4.4 million viewers on Sunday, according to early figures.
On another day of heat-induced low ratings, coverage of the Indianapolis round put up a respectable average of 4.42 million - a 27% share of the audience - between 6pm and 8.50pm.
Pushed to a later slot, Coronation Street took 7.91 million (35.4%) but was still good enough to rank first overall. The Last Detective had 5.51 million (26.2%) for second.
BBC One's top-performing show, 55 Degrees North, pulled in 5.02 million (26%) in the 8pm hour while an hour later, David Dimbleby's A Picture Of Britain averaged 4.46 million (19.4%).
Channel 4's Big Brother put in a lacklustre 2.66 million (11.6%), ranking fourth in the 9pm hour. The penultimate Celebrity Love Island managed 3.09 million (22.3%) from 10.50pm (more).
Multichannel's top draw was a Doctor Who repeat on BBC Three, with 719,000 (6.3%) between 7pm and 7.45pm.
Sky One's Ross Kemp On Gangs also had a good showing, averaging 582,000 (4.5%) in the 10pm hour.
ITV2 enjoyed success through primetime with Brendan Fraser movie The Mummy Returns, attracting 568,000 (4.6%) between 9.20pm and 11.45pm.
