INTERNATIONAL TELEVISION FESTIVAL, EDINBURGH -- Highlights of new BBC One controller Peter Fincham's speech this morning.

- BBC One "unarguably" the channel for major events. "They're part of what defines the channel."
- "BBC One is going to have to navigate its way into a new landscape where all bets are off. Once an only child, [it] now has to compete for attention in a noisy and crowded playroom."
- The on-demand theme recurred once again in Fincham's speech. "Within a few years we'll access programmes like we access music on an iPod," he predicted.
- "My background is in comedy and reviving comedy on BBC One is one of our highest priorities."
