ITV has said talent show Grease Is The Word was unlikely to return anytime soon, after the show failed to perform.

Talking to The Stage ITV director of television Simon Shaps said: "Grease is the Word did not do as well as we had hoped and so we have no immediate plans to do any more. We are pretty well stocked for Saturday night entertainment at the moment with shows like The X Factor and Dancing On Ice."

BBC One talent search Any Dream Will Do? consistently beat its ITV Grease rival when they both aired earlier this year. Over the run of the series, the BBC managed an average 5.8 million viewers across 10 shows, compared to 3.9 million for the run of Grease is the Word.

Last Saturday, the BBC's new talent show Dance X beat off ITV lyric quiz Sing It Back attracting 4.8 million viewers against ITV's 1.9 million.
