Television news is dominated by men, researchers have found.

The Fawcett Society surveyed a variety of media and has revealed what it says is a "gender divide".

Women's representation among major television and radio news presenters was larger than most at 15 out of 34, or 44%. However, of 17 news programme editors surveyed only one was a woman.

Also, only 26% of political journalists registered at the House of Commons, from broadcast and print media, are women.

Female representation among print media editors was found to be even worse than broadcast.

Dr Katherine Rake, director of the Fawcett Society, explained: "Today's survey shows that the media is missing out on the huge pool of female talent, and Britain's viewers, listeners and readers are also missing out as a result.

"Women must not only be presenting the news, they must be making the decisions that determine what gets broadcast in the first place.

"We now need to see positive steps taken to make sure that women can break through the glass ceiling and fulfill their potential at the highest level."
