The non-Microsoft browser can be used with the download version of the application for the first time and follows a string of criticism regarding the problem.
So far non-Internet Explorer users have only been able to stream programmes.
The BBC's Antony Rose, who has been overseeing development of the iPlayer, explained: "It's good because it's the first real non-Microsoft thing we've been able to do with the download iPlayer."
He said he was surprised to find the iPlayer's video distribution platform had a problem with Firefox: "What we did was to write our own Firefox plug-in instead."
The download function remains incompatible with operating systems other than Windows, however, six months after being released as a test and more than a month since its official launch.
