Radio 4 presenter Nigel Wrench has told a jury he had consensual sex with a student who is accusing him of rape.

The PM journalist, 47, is standing trial for rape at the Old Bailey. The jury was previously ordered to return not guilty verdicts on charges of sexual assault and supplying Temazepam with the intention to engage in sexual activity.

Wrench denied all the charges. Earlier in the trial it was alleged he asked the 26-year-old man back to his home after a New Year's Eve party.

Wrench, giving evidence, told the jury they drank champagne together then had consensual sex. He said he would have stopped if asked.

"The last thing - that is the irony of the situation, isn't it? - I would have done is to harm him," said Wrench, from Finsbury Park, North London.

He said it was "hard to believe" the student's claims he had "blackouts" while at Wrench's home. Wrench said he took Temazepam to go to sleep. He offered one to the alleged victim, who cannot be named, and it was accepted, he said.

The trial continues.
