Gambling channels will be reclassified from editorial to teleshopping under new Ofcom plans, the regulator has said.
It would affect about ten services and include those running virtual racing. The idea has been prompted by the Gambling Act 2005 coming into force and would mean the content being regulated as advertising rather than broadcasting.
The change could give better protection to those viewing and betting through the services. Ofcom has written to the broadcasters involved and asked for responses before it goes ahead.
Stephanie Brook, from Ofcom, said: "The proposed changes are designed to increase and improve consumer protection, ensure a clear, consistent and robust regulatory framework, and align Ofcom policy with the broad definition of advertising set out in the Gambling Act 2005."
