The audience of Capital 95.8 in London has fallen into fourth place - below that of Kiss 100 - for the first time.

Capital's weekly reach in the city fell to 1.56m listeners - down 3.7% on the same period last year - during the first three months of 2008, according to RAJAR figures released today.

Bauer-owned Kiss has increased its audience an impressive 16.7% year-on-year to reach 1.58m. Kiss's share of overall listening time in London remained lower than that of Capital, though, at 4.3% to the competitor's 4.6%.

Capital, owned by GCap, introduced a new schedule in February - bringing in Denise Van Outen and Greg Burns - and managing director Paul Jackson said it was too early to judge its success.

Magic 105.4, which is also owned by Bauer and has had the largest weekly audience in London for the past year, reached 1.92m per week in London during the first quarter.

The station was neck-and-neck with rival Heart in terms of share of listening, with both on 5.8%.

The weekly reach of Global-owned Heart was 1.85m - 8.8% up on the previous quarter and 70,000 fewer than Magic.

Meanwhile, Xfm 104.9, another GCap station, saw its reach continue to decline steeply, to 0.38m. The figure is down 26.1% on the final three months of 2007 and a huge 39.8% year-on-year.

Kiss managing director Steve Parkinson said he believed the station could continue to grow. "It is a year since we refreshed the sound of the station and put newcomers Rickie and Melvin in at breakfast," he said.

"Today's results are a great springboard into out £1.5m investment in summer activity which we hope will deliver still further growth for the newly invigorated Kiss."
