C4 may use part of DAB mux for mobile TV

Channel 4 may use part of the second national DAB multiplex to transmit mobile television.

The broadcaster - the largest partner in the 4Digital Group, which owns the licence to operate the multiplex - will use up to 22% of its allocated spectrum which is already reserved for non-radio services.

Nathalie Schwarz, 4Digital Group chairman, last week told board members that Channel 4 would buy some of the capacity. The commitment could help allay fears about the financial viability of the multiplex, which is also intended to be used to transmit several new radio stations nationally.

Channel 4 has declined to confirm what it will use the spectrum for, though a source told Brand Republic it was likely to be mobile TV.

"In the licence application for the second national digital radio multiplex, 4Digital can reserve up to 22% of spectrum for data," said a Channel 4 spokesman.

"This includes using it for services such as traffic and travel bulletins and electronic programme guide facilities, and yes, some will also be used by Channel 4. We cannot specify how it will be used at this moment."
