Veteran BBC journalist Wheeler dies at 85

Sir Charles Wheeler, one of the BBC's longest-serving foreign correspondents, has died at the age of 85 following a battle with lung cancer.

Sir Charles held numerous presenting, reporting and producing positions at the corporation, including eight years in Washington covering stories such as the Watergate scandal and the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy.

BBC director general Mark Thompson said: "His integrity, his authority and his humanity graced the BBC's airwaves over many decades. He is utterly irreplaceable but like everyone else, I am privileged to have worked with him."

Sir Charles, who was also the father-in-law of London mayor Boris Johnson, joined the corporation in 1947. His other roles have included writing for the World Service, Europe correspondent and presenting Panorama and Newsnight.
