DJ Rod Lucas has claimed that he became a member of the British National Party (BNP) to research a story.
Lucas was reportedly axed from TalkSport after his name appeared on a leaked list of party members. However, the broadcaster told bosses that he was simply investigating the group.
"Rod Lucas has told TalkSport that as a freelance journalist, he and three colleagues joined the BNP while researching a story. As well as joining the BNP, Rod also joined 22 other organisations including the Animal Liberation Front, the Communist Party, the Anti-Vivisection movement, PDSA, Save The Panda, amongst others," read a TalkSport statement.
The station also made clear that it did not axe the broadcaster, insisting he only worked for them on a part-time basis.
"Contrary to reports, TalkSport would like to clarify that Lucas was not sacked as was reported. He is a freelance presenter whom the station has used on an ad-hoc basis."
