The number of Freeview homes is set to top the number of households with a Sky subscription by Christmas 2005.
The number of DTT sets sold through 2004 is likely to reach 3 million, taking Freeview's total reach to 5 million homes.
By comparison, the pay service from Sky currently has around 7.5 million subscribers and is "on target" to reach 8 million by this time next year.
Elementary mathematics reveals that - should Freeview sell at the same rate in 2005 - the service will be as big as Sky within twelve months.
The accelerated DTT takeup rate is also helping pay TV add-on 'Top Up TV', which expects to "comfortably" reach its 250,000 break even target within the next 24 months.
