ITV's 'The Stepfather' finishes strongly

ITV1's drama thriller The Stepfather made a strong finish in the ratings last night (Monday), according to early figures.

The conclusion of the two-parter averaged 7.28 million viewers and a 31.1% audience share between 9pm and 10.30pm, peaking just after 10pm with 7.79 million (34.7%). The numbers were up almost 700,000 on Sunday's first outing.

The BBC's competing Dalziel and Pascoe drew 6.73 million (27.5%) in the 9pm hour, down by 700,000 on the night before.

Soaps were the inevitable ratings bankers, with Coronation Street coming out on top with audiences of 12.46 million (53.8%) and 12.12 million (48.0%) for its 7.30pm and 8.30pm episodes respectively. EastEnders had 11.59 million (47.9%) at 8pm, while Emmerdale put in a solid 9.93 million (46.0%) an hour earlier.

Over on Five, meanwhile, The Most Outrageous TV Moments Ever averaged 1.65 million (7.7%) between 9pm and 11.05pm, peaking at 2.27 million (13.3%). Channel 4's orgasm-themed Bodyshock pleasured 1.68 million (6.9%) in the 9pm hour.

LivingTV's fourth series of I'm Famous and Frightened limped to a conclusion with an average of 91,000 viewers - a 0.8% multichannel share - between 9pm and 12am.

The premiere of Surreal Life spinoff Strange Love failed to interest viewers on VH-1 at 9pm, averaging a dismal 11,000 (0.1%) across the hour.

More popular was ITV2's Monday night movie The Rainmaker, which attracted an average of 423,000 (3.3%) between 9pm and 11.35pm. On E4, Smallville helped itself to 252,000 (1.6%), with a timeshifted repeat adding a further 59,000 viewers. At 10pm, original commission Fool Around averaged 105,000 (0.7%) and an extra 30,000 via E4+1.

Elsewhere, MTV's Total Request Live showed signs of picking up with an average of 16,000 (0.1%) at 6pm. Ratings built throughout the hour to reach a peak of 36,000 toward the end.

Overall during primetime, ITV1 led with an average share of 36.7%, more than ten points ahead of BBC One's 26.2%. BBC Two was third with 8.5%, followed by C4 on 5.3% and Five on 4.7%.
