INTERNATIONAL TV FESTIVAL, EDINBURGH --

Original shows are to appear on UKTV Gold as part of a strategy to shed the network's "archive" image.

Charlotte Ashton, director of network programming at UKTV, outlined a "three-prong" plan to introduce the new shows to the mix.

"We're going to start off with content that is rooted in the archive in some form," she said. "The second phase is boosting our talent and then we will move on to non-archive based formats."

The spend on the commissions will run to around £50,000 per half hour. Although Ashton ruled out "scripted comedy", she urged producers to approach her with "edgy" ideas.
