8 million attend ITV1's 'Trial' finale

The final half of Trial and Retribution was a huge ratings hit for ITV1 last night (Tuesday).

The ninth installment of the crime drama concluded with an average of 7.76 million viewers (33.7%) between 9pm and 10.30pm, finishing fourth for the day.

WWI documentary The Last Tommy had around half the audience for BBC One in the 9pm hour - 3.74 million (15.8%) - while the 10pm news bulletin had 3.98 million (18.4%).

The capture of Chrissie Watts helped EastEnders to top the chart with an audience of 12.25 million (51.4%) at 7.30pm. Emmerdale had 9.18 million (42.5%) for second at 7pm against Watchdog 's 5 million (23.2%).

Holby City managed third place overall with 8.02 million (32.9%) for BBC One in the 8pm hour. My Husband's Secret Life: Real Families, a documentary about gay husbands, flopped for ITV1 with just 2.97 million (12.2%). Channel 4's Property Ladder Revisited fared better with 3.12 million (12.8%), as did BBC Two's Mastermind finale with 3.02 million (12.4%). Five documentary Hannibal of the Alps: Revealed put in 1.43 million (5.9%).

At 9pm, Five had the edge with a new CSI: Miami (2.75 million, 11.6%), a lead it retained an hour later with CSI: New York (2.16 million, 11.3%). A documentary about Princess Di's interview with Martin Bashir, Arena: The Princess and Panorama, drew 2 million (8.5%) to BBC Two at 9pm before the audience halved to just 1.06 million (4.9%) for comedy Supernova. On Channel 4, Make Me a Million managed 1.38 million (5.8%) before documentary The Spy Who Conned Me captured 1.08 million (5.8%).

Stargate SG-1 was the most popular original show of the day amongst the multichannels, averaging 660,000 (3.8%) for Sky One at 8pm. On ITV2 at the same time, the final episode of The Xtra Factor: Best and Worst Auditions was seen by 363,000 (2.1%).

The fortunes flipped an hour later, however, with Hugh Grant movie About A Boy landing 599,000 (4%) for ITV2 through 11pm. Sky One had 360,000 (2.2%) with The 4400 but was beaten by Living TV's Most Haunted, which managed 397,000 (2.4%) and an extra 146,000 (1.1%) via timeshift.
