Andrew Thompson, head of new media development and sports news at the BBC, has been appointed as Channel 4's new head of sport.

In his time at the corporation, Thompson has been charged with running interactive TV services, including coverage of Wimbledon, and the BBC Sports website.

"Andrew has an established track record of bringing innovative approaches to sports broadcasting," said Kevin Lygo, C4's director of television. "He's uniquely placed to continue Channel 4's reputation for original and distinctive sports programming."

Thompson takes up the new role from February.
