ITV, BBC agree World Cup coverage plans

ITV and the BBC have come to an agreement over joint coverage of the World Cup this summer.

The pair have been in negotiations for several weeks over how to split the games, with particular attention to coverage of England's games.

ITV has come out on top on that score, bagging two of England's group games, but in exchange the BBC gets first pickings of the later rounds.

The BBC will show England's first game against Paraguay on June 10, while ITV will show the matches with Trinidad & Tobago and Sweden on June 15 and June 20 respectively.

For the round of sixteen, the BBC will have first pick and ITV picks two and three. The rest will be divided between both broadcasters.

In the quarter final, the BBC will have first and fourth picks and ITV picks two and three.

If England reaches the semi-final, both broadcasters will air the game live and ITV will also air the other semi-final, but if England are out, ITV will have first pick of the semi-finals.

As usual, both broadcasters will air the World Cup final live.

"We are delighted that we will be showing England's opening game against Paraguay and potentially their first two knock-out games," said Roger Mosey, the BBC's director of sport. "There will be more television, radio and new media coverage of this World Cup than ever before and we're confident audiences will have a great choice of viewing."

Mosey's ITV counterpart, Mark Sharman, added: "We are very pleased to have reached an agreement that gives ITV guaranteed coverage of two England group games, in particular a peak time decider against Sweden. We are all looking forward to an exciting World Cup in Germany."
