Huw Edwards has signed a new deal keeping him at the BBC for a further five years.
Under the contract, Edwards will continue to anchor the Ten O'Clock News and will front a new show for BBC News 24.
The programme, airing weekdays between 5pm and 6pm from April 10, will combine rolling news with "high-profile interviews and additional discussion of the day's events". The move puts Edwards head-to-head with Sky News anchor Jeremy Thompson, who was recently named "Presenter of the Year" by the Royal Television Society.
"This is a dream combination for me," said Edwards. "I get to rejoin News 24 which I helped launch back in 1997, and to keep on presenting the Ten which is an enormous privilege."
Meanwhile, the BBC has confirmed that its 1pm and 6pm bulletins will join the Ten in being simulcast on News 24 from April 10.
