'Dibley' beats Goody eviction show

Having ended with a Christmas special last month, Dawn French sitcom Vicar of Dibley continues to be a hit for BBC One, with a tribute show attracting more viewers than Celebrity Big Brother.

The show featured clips, interviews and behind the scenes footage from the Richard Curtis-penned comedy, drawing in 5.8 million viewers and a 23% share of the audience.

The Christmas special managed an audience of 12.3 million, putting it top of the Christmas ratings.

The show beat viewing figures for the eviction of Jade Goody's mother Jackiey from Celebrity Big Brother, which pulled in 4.2 million and a 17% share at 9pm. The third episode of Desperate Housewives which followed kept hold of 2.9 million for Channel 4 in the 10pm hour.

But ITV won the reality battle, with Soapstar Superstar managing 5.1 million viewers, and a 21% share between 9 and 10.30pm.

Earlier in the evening the soaps did well for ITV1, with Emmerdale managing to attract an audience of 8.6 million and Coronation Street 10.6 million.
