Graham Norton's new BBC Two chatshow attracted 2.2 million viewers and an 11.1% share at 10pm last night.
But the first in the 13-part series was beaten in the ratings by ITV1's Benidorm and BBC One's Ten O'Clock News.
ITV1's Johnny Vegas comedy got 3.7 million viewers and an 18.8% share in the same slot, with the news attracting 4.5 million viewers and a 23% share.
Earlier on BBC Two, Peter Davidson comedy Fear Stress and Anger was watched by 1.9 million and a 9% share at 9pm, with the new series of sketch and impressions show Dead Ringers managing 2 million viewers, also with a 9% share at 9.30pm.
Meanwhile on ITV, 2.9 million people returned for the fourth episode of Bonkers, 100,000 more than last week, giving it a 13% share.
On BBC One, Hotel Babylon took 6.6 million and a 30% share with its second episode, which guest starred David Walliams, gaining 1.2 million from last week.
Another BBC drama, Waterloo Road did less well, losing 100,000 viewers from last week, with 5.3 million and a 23% share.
