Research released this week shows that Sky News has more upmarket viewers tuning in each day than any other pan-European news channel.

The European Media Survey measures the media consumption of Europe's most affluent individuals. Conducted by Interview-NSS, part of Synovate, it is the largest single-source survey of this audience.

Sky News has the highest daily reach amongst news/business channels in the core EMS universe of 5%, from its daily audience of almost 2 million.

John Ryley, head of Sky News, said: "These results show that viewers across Europe, and globally, appreciate Sky News’ round-the-clock breaking news coverage. It’s a rich and fast-paced mix of news that meets the needs of Europe's business people. And it’s a tribute to the Sky News team that the channel has recently been awarded two News Channel of the Year awards in the UK - and the 2006 International Emmy for Breaking News."

Sky News is also top in the "super-elite" EMS Select group, made up of individuals in the top 3% of households in Europe by income. At 5% daily reach, the channel beats the nearest competitor CNN International, who have a figure of 4.5%.

Though combining online and linear TV audiences, CNN International has a reach of 37.9%, which rises to 52.4% in the more upscale EMS Select universe.

Tony Maddox, managing director, CNN International, said: "CNN is well positioned for the digital era. At a time when audiences are consuming news not just on TV but also online, CNN leads the way. We will continue to be as agile as we can in bringing our news content to the audience wherever and whenever they need it."
