One Direction
One Direction are a boyband made up of five members: Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. They originated when, after all of them failed to get through 2011's X Factor auditions individually, they were put into a group.
Under Simon Cowell's mentorship, they would come third in the competition but succeeded in signing a record deal with his Syco label. Their debut single 'What Makes You Beautiful' entered the UK charts at number one while their album Up All Night peaked at number two in the album chart.
When released in the US in March 2012, the album went straight to number one in the Billboard 200. This made them the first group from the UK to enter at the top of the US charts with their debut album.
