Ridley Scott
After a critically acclaimed though commercially unsuccessful first film, Ridley Scott was asked to direct a low budget sci-fi film by 20th Century Fox. Under his directorship, it would become the box office triumph Alien and would launch him to international recognition. He followed this up with cult film Blade Runner starring Harrison Ford in a dystopian future and fantasy Legend, which was considered a flop. However, more recent films such as historical epic Gladiator and war film Black Hawk Down would cement his position as both a critically and commercially successful director.
