Comic and TV writer Marc Guggenheim will be in charge of recreating the series, in which the fleet of human survivors lead by the Galactica finally arrives at Earth in the 1980s and must help protect it from the Cylon invasion, reports io9.
The new series was announced at the Wizard World Philadelphia comic convention.
Guggenheim has worked on Marvel comics titles Amazing Spider-Man and Young X-Men and has written for TV shows including Law & Order, CSI: Miami and Brothers & Sisters.
He is currently writing Dynamite Entertainment's Super Zombies and the forthcoming television drama FlashForward.
Galactica 1980 ran for ten episodes in 1980 before its cancellation.
