DC Comics has enlisted the services of several high-profile writers and artists to work on its new series Wednesday Comics.

Critically-acclaimed scribes Neil Gaiman, Dave Gibbons, Paul Pope and Kurt Busiek are all on board as contributors, alongside artists Joe Kubert and Eduardo Risso.

"I wasn't expecting to get Neil Gaiman and Joe Kubert, or Paul Pope. It's been pretty great," said DC editor Mark Chiarello.

"There's always that saying, be careful what you wish for, because a lot of them are at the top of the heap, so scheduling them has been fun in a challenging way."

The 12-issue weekly series features one-page stories on 20-by-14inch newsprint pages starring some of DC's iconic superheroes, such as Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and The Flash.

The first issue of Wednesday Comics was released today.
