In an interview with MTV, the helmer confirmed that a script for the comic book adaptation is currently being worked on.
"These characters have been around forever and to really do justice to them and make the right movie, you have to get the script right," he said. "So we're still working on that and we'll see. With everything Marvel, we like to keep it in a shroud of secrecy."
Prince Namor the Sub-Mariner first starred in 1939's Marvel Comics #1. Created by Bill Everette, the Atlantean prince later appeared battling Nazis during World War II alongside Captain America. More recently, the character has been portrayed as an anti-hero in Marvel's Fantastic Four series.
Universal currently holds the rights to the role's picture, so a crossover with other Marvel film properties could pose copyright issues.
The studio originally planned to launch the movie in 2010.
