The character last appeared on the small screen in 1999 courtesy of HBO, but the show has been on hiatus since then. McFarlane's previous attempts to resurrect the cartoon have been thwarted by legal issues.
There has been no official update on its status since 2004, but the acclaimed artist and writer assured fans that Spawn will return to the network next year. "For those that've asked, the Spawn animated show will be back in Hollywood's face in 2010. Legal issues delayed it [these] past few years," he explained.
Spawn first aired on HBO in 1997, running for three seasons. The show was awarded an Emmy in 1999 for outstanding animation programme.
In addition to next year's animated project, McFarlane previously announced that he has begun work on the script to a new cinematic film based on the character.
