Kevin Smith's Batman: Cacophony has emerged as the bestselling hardcover graphic novel in The New York Times book chart.

Written by the Clerks director and drawn by Walter Flanagan, the series sees the Caped Crusader take on the villain Onomatopoeia, with the Joker caught in the middle.

Three more of Batman's outings appeared in the top five. Alan Moore's The Killing Joke came in second, Neil Gaiman's Whatever Happened To The Caped Crusader? was in fourth and Grant Morrison's Batman: RIP took fifth. Marvel's The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz occupied second spot.

DC also claimed top spot in the paperback chart. Watchmen appeared at the summit after 31 weeks in the top ten. Image's The Waking Dead finished the week in second.

Batman: Cacophony was released worldwide last week. It is available from comic book retailers priced $19.99 (£12.50).
