The Hellboy creator - who recently contributed design work to Guillermo del Toro's movie The Hobbit - explained in an interview with Newsarama that he intends to rededicate himself to writing and illustrating comics.
"It's funny because, when I was doing comics full time it was a dull daily grind," said Mignola. "But now that I'm not doing it, that's all I want to do.
"Because of the success of Hellboy in movies my life got more complicated, and it’s forced me to jump around a lot. My focus has been spread all over the place, and while it's fun to expand this thing the way it has I miss the old days sometimes.
"As I get older, what I really want to do - and what I enjoy doing - is writing and drawing my own stories. So that means I've go to focus. The trouble is that in the average shower, I dream up the story for an entire five-issue miniseries. I end up making up stories so fast that my drawing hand can't keep up."
Following the debut Hellboy miniseries, Mignola was writing and illustrating the title for some time.
Recently he has been co-writing Hellboy and its related titles with John Arcudi and Christopher Golden, with the majority of his work illustrated by different artists.
Following the completion of the Hellboy: The Wild Hunt and Witchfinder miniseries, Mignola will return to writing and drawing Hellboy full-time.
