Masioni will take over the art in Unknown Soldier #13, which begins a two-issue arc on the series.
Comics newcomer Masioni is from the Democratic Republic of Congo, close to where Unknown Soldier is set.
"It was early in the life of this series when we started kicking around the idea for finding an artist from approximately the same region as the book takes place to fill in for [regular series artist Alberto Ponticelli] when the time would finally come for the Italian stallion to have a much-needed break," said series writer Joshua Dysart on Vertigo's official blog Graphic Content.
The series follows the story of Dr Moses Lwanga, who finds himself unwittingly stranded in a war zone.
Unknown Soldier #13 is released later this month.
