Joss Whedon's screenwriter brother Zack is writing a one-shot prequel to the Emmy Award-winning Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog.

One in a series of forthcoming Dark Horse one-shots, Dr. Horrible delves into the origins of the characters Dr. Horrible and Captain Hammer, who were created by Zack and his brothers Joss and Jed.

"It's sort of like the origin of Dr. Horrible," Zack told Newsarama. "We knew the general backgrounds of these characters and their history with each other – that's alluded to in the show, that Dr. Horrible has been getting his butt kicked by Captain Hammer for quite a while, and that he’s been pining after Penny for a long time.

"But aside from those things, his origin was all created for this comic book."

The hit webseries stars How I Met Your Mother's Neil Patrick Harris as Horrible with Firefly's Nathan Fillion as his nemesis Hammer.

The Dr. Horrible one-shot is pencilled by Joelle Jones, and will be released on November 18.
