The Dark Reign: The List - Punisher one-shot, which was released this week, concluded with Dark Avenger Daken eviscerating Frank Castle.
The forthcoming Punisher #11 will begin the 'FrankenCastle' storyline, which will see the crimefighter resurrected as a Frankenstein-like monster.
"After his death, it was important to find some random hole in the Marvel U to drop him down, because Jason Aaron is doing amazing straight crime stuff in the PunisherMax book, and this needed to be different," Remender told Comic Book Resources.
"So we had to put on our thinking caps about where to take Frank after the end of The List. I had two or three different ideas, and they were all tied to different corners of the Marvel Universe.
"We ended up going with 'FrankenCastle', because it was the most fun and ties into a lot of stuff we're developing underneath New York - stuff that has a rich history within the Marvel Universe."
The Punisher is reborn beneath the city streets, suffering from serious memory problems and finding himself allied with Marvel's Legion of Monsters.
The six-issue story arc begins next month in Punisher #11.
