Azzarello details 'First Wave' world

Writer Brian Azzarello has revealed which characters are to appear in DC Comics’s mini-series First World.

The six-issue series follows on from this month’s Batman/Doc Savage Special one-shot and also features The Avenger, The Blackhawks - some of whom will be women - and The Spirit.

Azzarello promised new takes on the classic characters, including a less comedic Spirit and some new-look Batman villains.

He told Newsarama: "It won't be too obvious who are wearing the white and black hats in the story."

The scribe revealed that other writers and artists are to work on stories that spring from the "bible" of the mini-series, including the recently-announced ongoing The Spirit series, written by Mark Schultz.

Azzarello added: "It's a world without superpowers or magic, and I'm playing God with it."

First Wave, illustrated by Ralph Morales, will debut next year.
