Ahead of next month’s Captain America: Who Will Wield the Shield?, Marvel has teased the possibility of two versions of the same character.

The stand-alone issue explores what will happen between current Captain America Bucky Barnes and the original Captain, Steve Rogers, when he returns to the Marvel Universe.

Tom Brevoort, executive editor at Marvel, told IGN: "This one-shot very simply and very specifically answers the main question that we've been hearing since Reborn began: Who is going to be Captain America when all is said and done, and what happens to the other guy?

"Or can both Steve and Bucky be Cap?"

The return of Steve Rogers is being chronicled in the pages of mini-series Captain America: Reborn, which Marvel recently announced was being extended from five to six issues.

However, Brevoort warned: "Wield takes place after Reborn has concluded, even though it will now ship before #6 does, and it's necessary in order to set up some specific dominos for Siege, so we didn't have the latitude of shifting everything back when we decided to go all the way to six issues on Reborn."

Captain America: Who Will Wield the Shield?, by Ed Brubaker and Butch Guice, is out on December 23.
