On G4TV's Attack of the Show last night, host Blair Butler revealed that Hickman's (Secret Warriors, Fantastic Four) forthcoming series would delve into the past of the Marvel Universe.
Shield - illustrated by Dustin Weaver (Star Wars, X-Men: Kingbreaker) - will explore how some of the greatest figures in history have protected the world from cosmic threats such as Galactus.
Hickman said the six-issue miniseries "feels like the best thing I've done".
Marvel released a teaser image earlier in the day with cover art of the first issue and the tagline "They've been around since the dawn of time. How do they impact the past, present and future of the Marvel Universe?"
Shield will debut in April 2010.
