The actor and comedian is working on Dark Horse's Serenity: Float Out with artist Patric Reynolds.
The comic delves into the past of Serenity's late pilot Hoban 'Wash' Washburne.
"Post-Serenity, a bunch of Wash's friends who we haven't met on the show, they're basically buying a new ship and christening it," Oswalt told MTV News.
"It's called a 'float-out' when you christen a ship. As they're christening a new ship, they're telling stories about Wash, and we're basically seeing what could be the start of a new adventure."
Whedon's Firefly television show only lasted one season but has since been continued in the Serenity movie and now a series of comic books.
Serenity: Float Out will be released in June.
