DC Comics has confirmed that Paul Dini's Zatanna will debut in May.

Illustrated by Stephane Roux, the new ongoing series has been described as a "magical crime book".

In an interview with Newsarama, writer Dini outlined his plans for the character. "I felt the character was very interesting because she's a superheroine, a magician, a mystic, a celebrity," he said.

"She's kind of a unique amalgam of a lot of things and is unique in the DC Universe, despite the fact that she's been a part of that world for over 45 years and a recurring character in a lot of series."

The scribe also explained that the plotline will see Zatanna coming to the aid of victims of magical crime. "You can't take a witch or a wizard and put them in ordinary jail. You can't punish them the same way you can a regular lawbreaker," he added.

"Zatanna is the only person who kind of assumes that role. And so it's going to be, in a weird way, almost like a crime book."

Zatanna #1 will arrive in stores in May.
