Writer and artist Joe Sacco has won the Ridenhour Prize for Footnotes in Gaza.
The prize citation declared the graphic novel to be a "work of profound social significance, one that explores the complex continuum of history", reports Oregon Live.
"At a time when peace in the Middle East has never seemed more elusive, Sacco's illustrations bear witness to the lives of those who are trapped by the conflict," it continued.
The prize in named is honour of Ron Ridenhour, a Vietnam veteran and award-winning investigative journalist who was involved in exposing the My Lai massacre.
Other winners included Howard Zinn, who was posthumously awarded the Ridenhour Courage Prize, and Matthew Hoh, a State Department official in Afghanistan who resigned in protest of the war.
