The original Shadowhawk - who died years ago from AIDS-related illness - returns in the new ongoing title to discover a world much changed from the one he remembers.
"The high concept for the series would be a Rip Van Winkle paradigm, I guess," the Shadowhawk creator told CBR.
"The story is about how quickly things change and why we can never really go back to the way things were, because they usually weren't. Paul left a violent world, but since then things have gotten even worse. Technology has taken leaps ahead - everything from cell phones and the internet becoming ubiquitous to HDTV, and we won't even mention 'reality' shows."
Valentino promised that current Eddie Collins "is not and will not be forgotten".
The new series will spin out of the current Image United miniseries.
Shadowhawk will be written by Dan Wickline (Grimm Fairy Tales) and illustrated by Tone Rodriguez, with Valentino overseeing the project and illustrating a supporting feature penned by Steve Niles (30 Days of Night).
The title will debut on May 5.
