Fumi Yoshinaga's Ōoku: The Inner Chambers manga has won the James Tiptree Jr Award, reports Anime News Network.

The annual literary award honours 'science fiction or fantasy that expands or explores our understanding of gender'.

The jurors said that they had little experience of manga and limited knowledge of Japanese history, but "fell in love with… the detailed exploration of the world of these books".

Ōoku tells the story of an alternate-reality medieval Japan in which a mysterious plague has eradicated most of the male population.

Viz Media will publish the third volume in the series on April 20.
