Artist Ryan Stegman has signed an exclusivity agreement with Marvel Comics.

The illustrator already has several Marvel credits under his belt, including recent work on the publisher's Sif and Incredible Hercules titles.

"When it came through I actually didn't understand what was happening because it was so unexpected," Stegman said. "I was approached by [Marvel senior vice president] David Bogart at C2E2 and he asked if I had a minute to talk.

"So we talked and he told me that Marvel wanted to make a commitment to me and gave me the details. He told me, 'I'll give you some time to think about it and you can get back to me', to which I replied, 'I'll take it!'"

The move is thought to be a means of countering a string of impending creative appointments at rival firm DC Comics.

Stegman will begin work on a series of books based on an unnamed heroine immediately.
