The illustrator already has several Marvel credits under his belt, including recent work on the publisher's Sif and Incredible Hercules titles.
"When it came through I actually didn't understand what was happening because it was so unexpected," Stegman said. "I was approached by [Marvel senior vice president] David Bogart at C2E2 and he asked if I had a minute to talk.
"So we talked and he told me that Marvel wanted to make a commitment to me and gave me the details. He told me, 'I'll give you some time to think about it and you can get back to me', to which I replied, 'I'll take it!'"
The move is thought to be a means of countering a string of impending creative appointments at rival firm DC Comics.
Stegman will begin work on a series of books based on an unnamed heroine immediately.
