Image creators have shed light on the future of the delayed Image United, Bleeding Cool reports.

Issue #3 of the crossover project has suffered lengthy delays, giving rise to rumours that the series has been cancelled.

When asked on his message board whether the comic is "dead in the water", artist Rob Liefeld replied: "That's about right," before adding: "Fans should ask Todd [McFarlane] why he won't finish the third issue."

However, Walking Dead scribe Robert Kirkman was quick to dismiss Liefeld's comments as banter.

"While it is true that Todd is up to his usual tricks this book is far from being 'dead in the water'. That's just Rob doing some friendly ribbing Todd's way to get him off his baseball-loving ass," he said.

Elsewhere, Savage Dragon creator Erik Larsen maintained that the series will continue as planned.

"Updates are - it's being worked on. #3 is particularly complicated due to the sheer number of characters involved. I think once we're over that hurdle things will go a bit smoother. It is getting worked on – it’s not as though we’ve given up on it," he wrote on the Image message boards.

Image Comics declined to comment on the future of Image United.
