The live-action adaptation of Akira is to be fast-tracked now that producer Andrew Lanzar has hired a screenwriter for the project.

Comics Alliance reports that Albert Torres has been hired as screenwriter to join From Hell director Albert Hughes.

Lanzar has said that the film will revolve around the first three volumes of the manga, with a proposed sequel to focus on volumes four to six.

Akira happens to be something that Warner Brothers management loves. They see value in the franchise,” Lanzar told Collider.

The 1988 anime adaptation of Akira, directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, is generally regarded as a landmark anime film, and is partially responsible for the rise in popularity of manga and anime outside of Japan.
